The Delhi government has approved a massive expansion of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation network under Phase V(B), adding over 97 kilometers of new lines and more than 65 stations across seven corridors. The project, estimated to cost ₹48,000 crore, aims to connect outer regions such as Najafgarh, Narela, Mithapur, and Khera Kalan with central Delhi.
Project Details
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced that the expansion will ensure balanced urban growth and improved public transport access for residents in the city's periphery. Four corridors have been prioritised for completion by 2029, while the entire project is currently awaiting final approval from the central government.
Key Corridors
- Najafgarh to Central Delhi
- Narela to Central Delhi
- Mithapur to Central Delhi
- Khera Kalan to Central Delhi
The expansion is expected to significantly reduce travel time for commuters from these outer regions and decongest existing metro lines. The Delhi Metro, already one of the largest metro networks in the world, will further strengthen its reach with this phase.
Funding and Timeline
The ₹48,000 crore project will be funded through a combination of state and central government allocations, as well as possible loans from multilateral agencies. Once approved, construction is expected to begin by early 2027, with the first corridors operational by 2029. The entire network is projected to be completed by 2032.
This expansion marks a significant step towards sustainable urban mobility in the national capital region, aligning with the government's vision of a greener and more connected city.
