The Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) on Wednesday inaugurated a chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) field training and demonstration centre at the Burari plains in New Delhi, aimed at strengthening preparedness for radiological and nuclear emergencies.
Inaugurated by DRDO Chairman Samir V Kamat, the centre is envisioned as a unique DRDO-CBRN-centre of excellence, equipped with state-of-the-art facilities. These include a dedicated radiological and nuclear test bed facility, a heavy ion research facility, emergency medical response units, and real-time field response units.
Key Facilities and Their Purpose
The radiological and nuclear test bed facility provides a specialised, controlled environment for testing, validating, and demonstrating technologies related to nuclear energy, radiation detection, and hazardous material management. Such facilities are crucial for research and development in nuclear science, material testing, and emergency response training. This setup helps bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical training for responding to unconventional threats.
Training for Multiple Agencies
The centre is part of the upcoming CBRN centre of excellence under the Institute of Nuclear Medicine & Allied Sciences (INMAS). It is dedicated to the effective training of responders from the defence ministry, home ministry, National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), and various other agencies involved in CBRN exigencies preparedness and crisis response.
By providing hands-on experience in a controlled environment, the centre aims to enhance the capabilities of personnel dealing with radiological and nuclear incidents, thereby bolstering national security and public safety.
