Elderly Man Killed in Bison Attack Near Kolhapur Forest
In a tragic wildlife incident, an 80-year-old man lost his life after being attacked by a bison near the Radhanagari forest in Kolhapur district on Saturday. The victim, identified as Shamrao Kondiba Korane, was a resident of a village in Radhanagari tehsil of Kolhapur district. He was rushed to CPR Hospital in Kolhapur city, where doctors declared him dead upon arrival.
Details of the Attack
According to police reports, Korane was resting under a tree when the bison suddenly appeared and charged at him. One of the animal's horns pierced his chest, causing fatal injuries. Police stated that forest officials were immediately informed about the attack, and a team visited the site to investigate.
The investigation team found clear marks of bison hooves at the location, and medical examinations later confirmed that the injuries were consistent with a bison attack. This incident highlights the growing dangers posed by wildlife in the area.
Rising Incidents of Bison Attacks
Bison attacks are becoming increasingly common in Kolhapur, alongside leopard attacks. Forest officials suggest that bisons may be turning more aggressive due to factors such as scorching heat or perceived threats. The village where the attack occurred is near Dajipur's forests, which are known for hosting large populations of bisons.
This rise in attacks underscores the need for enhanced safety measures and public awareness in forest-adjacent communities. Authorities are urging residents to exercise caution and report any wildlife sightings promptly to prevent further tragedies.
