EU and India Mark 64 Years of Diplomatic Ties at Europe Day

As the aroma of Belgian waffles, German pretzels, and French cheeses filled the air, the lawns of a Janpath hotel shimmered in European Union blue and yellow during Europe Day celebrations. The reception marked 64 years of diplomatic ties between India and the EU.

Pahalgam Attack Remembered

EU Ambassador Hervé Delphin, addressing the gathering, recalled last year's Pahalgam attack. "A year ago, this moment of celebration was overshadowed by the heinous terrorist attack at Pahalgam that took the lives of innocent victims and led to the four-day war and Operation Sindoor. On that occasion, we paid tribute to them with a minute of silence. This year, unfortunately, wars and conflict continue to rage on in different parts of the world, with a direct impact on our society, on our economies, and on the well-being of our citizens," he said.

India's Firm Stand on Terrorism

Picking up on the ambassador's reference, Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs Nirmala Sitharaman said, "A year ago, during Operation Sindoor, our armed forces showcased their valour and gave a firm response to those who attacked our people. Operation Sindoor reflected India’s firm response against terrorism and an unflinching commitment to safeguarding national security. India remains committed in its resort to defeat terrorism and destroy its enabling ecosystem."

A Taste of Europe

Attendees sampled dishes from 25 EU member states, including Austria, France, Lithuania, Spain, the Netherlands, Poland, and Germany. Finnish cookies, Romanian cozonac, Bulgarian cold cuts, and beverages from Slovenia offered insight into some of Europe’s culinary traditions. Enjoying a pretzel and sausages, German Ambassador Philipp Ackermann shared, "It feels really good to be here. Europe Day is very important to us as Europeans."

Bridging Societies

Noting the values of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, Nirmala Sitharaman said, "Initiatives such as the India-EU trilateral framework reflect a shared commitment to global development and the spirit of us, Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam – the world is one family. At the core of this partnership are our people. The Indian diaspora in Europe, numbering over 1.3 million, serves as a vibrant bridge between our societies. Educational exchanges, research collaborations, and cultural linkages continue to deepen mutual understanding."

The evening saw an elaborate show of classical Indian dances and a fusion performance with European dances.

Reliable Partners

Swedish Ambassador Jan Thesleff shared, "In a world where we see growing uncertainty, it’s good to have reliable partners and friends. India is one such partner of Europe. I’m very happy to be here celebrating unity, predictability and trust."
