Farmer Fatally Attacked by Tiger in Uttar Pradesh's Kheri District
A tragic incident unfolded in Uttar Pradesh's Kheri district on Monday afternoon, resulting in the death of a young farmer following a tiger attack. The victim, identified as 25-year-old Manoj Kumar from Nandlalpur village, was harvesting sugarcane setts in his field when the predator struck.
Details of the Fatal Incident
The attack occurred around 4 pm in an agricultural field located approximately 5 kilometers from the Mohamdi forest range, which falls under the South Kheri forest division. The site was merely 300 meters from the village habitation, highlighting the proximity of human settlements to wildlife territories. Upon hearing Manoj Kumar's desperate screams, fellow farmers from adjacent fields rushed to the scene, prompting the tiger to retreat into the dense sugarcane fields.
Manoj Kumar sustained severe injuries to his neck and back during the assault. Despite immediate efforts to transport him to medical care, he succumbed to his wounds while en route to the Gola community health centre.
Forest Department's Response and Investigation
Divisional Forest Officer Thapas Mihir promptly visited the attack site to assess the situation. In response to the incident, the forest department has initiated several measures:
- Installation of five camera traps in the surrounding area to identify the specific tiger involved and monitor its movements.
- Deployment of forest teams to maintain surveillance and ensure community safety.
- Issuance of advisories to local villagers, urging heightened caution while working in fields near forested zones.
DFO Mihir emphasized that officials have been instructed to compile comprehensive reports on man-animal conflicts in villages situated near the Katna river, which flows approximately one kilometer from Nandlalpur village. These findings will inform future protective strategies and interventions.
Community Concerns and Demands for Protection
Village Pradhan Deep Kumar voiced significant concerns regarding the persistent threat posed by frequent tiger and leopard movements in the region. He highlighted that repeated appeals for enhanced protective measures, including the installation of chain-link fencing along the forest boundary, have remained unaddressed, leaving residents vulnerable to such dangerous encounters.
The forest department has recommended financial compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the victim's family, in accordance with the state's relief policy for such tragedies. This move aims to provide some support to the bereaved family amidst their loss.
