A large crocodile, estimated to be 10 to 12 feet long, was spotted in the Gerua River near Sanaur village in the Basantrai block of Godda district on Saturday, causing panic among local residents and prompting swift action from forest authorities.
Panic Grips Villagers
According to residents, some villagers who were grazing cattle along the riverbank noticed the reptile resting near the water. The sight caused instant alarm, forcing them to flee the area. Several villagers later managed to capture photographs of the crocodile on their mobile phones and uploaded them on social media, which further spread concern.
Forest Department Responds
The sighting was reported to the forest department, following which a team rushed to the spot and inspected multiple points along the river. Officials confirmed the presence of the crocodile and intensified monitoring in the region.
Residents were advised to avoid going near the river, refrain from bathing, fishing, or taking livestock to the riverbank, and immediately report any further sightings to the authorities.
Expert Analysis
Forester Rajeev Modi stated that the crocodile may have drifted into the Gerua River from the Ganga River, covering a distance of about 40 to 50 kilometers. Based on the photographs, the reptile is an adult measuring around 10 to 12 feet in length and may be nearly 30 years old, he added.
