The Government Railway Police (GRP) in Jaipur on Sunday apprehended a member of a Haryana-based theft gang for allegedly stealing jewellery valued at approximately Rs 63 lakh and cash amounting to Rs 2 lakh from a family traveling from Chennai to Jaipur by train. According to police, the entire stolen haul has been recovered from the accused.
Accused Identified
The accused has been identified as Sonu, a 52-year-old resident of Rohtak district in Haryana. The incident occurred on May 1 when a Chennai-based family was traveling to Jaipur aboard Train No. 12969. Due to overcrowding inside the coach, the family shifted some of their luggage, including a trolley bag containing the jewellery, to the gallery area of coach B-1 near Durgapura railway station.
Taking advantage of the rush and movement of passengers, the accused lifted the jewellery box from the trolley bag without arousing suspicion, said Arun Chaudhary, Circle Inspector of GRP Jaipur, as reported by TOI.
Theft Discovery and Investigation
The family realized the theft only after reaching their home in Jaipur and checking their bags. They subsequently filed a First Information Report (FIR) with the railway police. Investigations revealed that such gangs specifically target passengers carrying valuables, exploiting crowded conditions inside trains during arrival and departure at stations, Chaudhary added.
The stolen items included gold chains, necklaces, bangles, rings, mangalsutras, earrings, silver ornaments, and cash. We have recovered the stolen jewellery worth Rs 63 lakh and cash of Rs 2 lakh from the possession of the accused, an officer stated.
GRP officials mentioned that efforts are underway to identify and apprehend other members of the gang involved in this theft.
