Hasimara Airport: Land Acquisition Cleared for Civil Flights

Jalpaiguri: Four years after the Centre sanctioned a civil airport at Hasimara under the UDAN scheme, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has cleared land acquisition to facilitate civilian flight operations from Hasimara Airport. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) requires 37.74 acres to allow A320 aircraft operations at the strategic Indian Air Force (IAF) base.

Significance for North Bengal

Currently, north Bengal relies heavily on Bagdogra Airport, as the nearby Cooch Behar airport remains non-operative due to its short runway. The development of Hasimara Airport is expected to reduce pressure on Bagdogra and improve connectivity in the region.

Commercial Potential

Located in the Dooars, the airport lies within 40 km of Alipurduar town and is surrounded by nearly 200 tea gardens, making it commercially significant for tourism and trade. The move is likely to boost local economy and provide better travel options for residents and visitors.

The land acquisition process is expected to begin soon, with the AAI aiming to complete the required infrastructure for civilian flights. The project aligns with the central government's UDAN scheme, which seeks to enhance regional air connectivity.
