Heavy Overnight Rain Revives Waterbodies in North Karnataka

Heavy overnight rain in several districts of north Karnataka has infused life into waterbodies, bringing much-needed relief to the region. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted rains with thunder activity over the old Mysuru region for the next four days.

Rainfall Details and Impact

The downpour, which began late on 23 May and continued into the early hours of 24 May, led to significant accumulation of rainwater. In Bhatkal, Uttara Kannada district, rainwater was seen accumulating at a National Highway widening site near Ranginakatta. The sudden deluge has improved the water levels in local lakes, ponds, and reservoirs, which were previously under stress due to the summer heat.

IMD Forecast

The IMD has issued a forecast indicating that the old Mysuru region, including districts like Mysuru, Mandya, Chamarajanagar, and parts of Kodagu, will experience rains accompanied by thunder and lightning over the next four days. Residents are advised to take necessary precautions as the weather activity may cause temporary disruptions.

Regional Response

Local authorities in north Karnataka have been alerted to monitor the situation, especially in low-lying areas prone to waterlogging. The rain is expected to boost agricultural activities and ease the drinking water scarcity in some parts. However, officials are also keeping an eye on potential flooding in vulnerable zones.

The overnight rain has been a welcome change for the region, which had been experiencing a dry spell. The waterbodies, including the Tungabhadra and Krishna river basins, have shown a noticeable rise in water levels. Farmers, who were worried about the delay in monsoon, have expressed relief as the pre-monsoon showers will help in preparing the soil for sowing.

As the IMD continues to monitor the weather patterns, further updates are expected. Residents of the affected areas are urged to stay tuned to local advisories and avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rain spells.
