Heavy rains pounded several parts of the Old Mysuru region on Monday, leading to waterlogging and disruption of normal life. The downpour, which started in the early hours, continued intermittently throughout the day, inundating low-lying areas and causing traffic snarls on major roads.
Areas Affected
The worst-hit areas included Mysuru city and surrounding talukas such as Nanjangud, T. Narasipur, and Hunsur. Several residential colonies and commercial establishments reported water entering their premises, forcing residents to shift to safer locations. The Mysuru City Corporation deployed pumps to drain out water from flooded streets.
Impact on Daily Life
The heavy rains severely impacted vehicular movement, with many roads becoming impassable. Commuters faced long delays as traffic crawled through waterlogged stretches. Schools and colleges in affected areas declared a holiday, and some offices allowed employees to work from home. The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) diverted buses on several routes to avoid flooded areas.
Agricultural fields in the region, especially those with standing crops like paddy and sugarcane, suffered damage due to waterlogging. Farmers expressed concern over potential crop loss if the rains continued. The district administration has assessed the situation and initiated relief measures, including the opening of temporary shelters for those displaced.
Weather Forecast
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted more rains in the region over the next 48 hours. An orange alert has been issued for Mysuru, Chamarajanagar, and Kodagu districts, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall. Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious and avoid venturing into flood-prone areas.
The sudden downpour is attributed to a depression over the Bay of Bengal, which has brought widespread rainfall to southern Karnataka. The IMD has also warned of possible landslides in hilly areas and urged people to stay alert.
