IMD Issues Yellow Alert for Kerala Districts Amid Heavy Rain Forecast
IMD Yellow Alert for Kerala as Heavy Rain Expected

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued yellow alerts for several districts in Kerala as pre-monsoon showers intensify across the state. The weather activity, which includes heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds, is expected to continue until at least May 20. The southwest monsoon is anticipated to arrive later this month, around May 26, with a margin of error of plus or minus four days.

Yellow Alerts for Districts

The IMD has placed Thiruvananthapuram under a heavy rainfall warning, with precipitation ranging between 7 cm and 11 cm within 24 hours from May 16 to May 18. A yellow alert has been issued for Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Kottayam, Idukki, Pathanamthitta, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod. On May 18, alerts are expected to continue for parts of central Kerala, including Thrissur, Palakkad, and Malappuram.

Thunderstorms and Wind Warnings

The department has warned of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40–50 kmph across Kerala until at least May 20. Coastal regions and the Lakshadweep area are likely to witness squally weather conditions, with wind speeds potentially gusting up to 60 kmph. Fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing into the sea during this period.

Impact on Travellers

For travellers, the weather means disruptions across several popular tourist destinations, including mountain destinations such as Wayanad, Munnar, and Idukki. Potential hazards include slippery roads, reduced visibility, and the possibility of landslides or mudslides. Traffic congestion, temporary road blockages, and waterlogging in low-lying areas are also expected. Backwater tourism hubs like Alappuzha and Kottayam are expected to receive heavy showers, and travellers planning houseboat stays are advised to monitor the weather closely.

Relief from Summer Heat

The ongoing rainfall has brought relief from the intense summer heat, with recent showers lowering temperatures across several Kerala districts by a few degrees. Meanwhile, the tourism industry is closely monitoring the forecasts. While rain adds to the charm of Kerala’s beauty, travellers are encouraged to plan carefully and stay updated through official IMD advisories. Rain or thundershowers are most likely at many places in Kerala until May 22, the IMD said.
