India has extended warm greetings to Samoa on its Independence Day, marking a significant step in fulfilling a commitment made during the third Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC III) summit. The gesture underscores India's deepening engagement with Pacific Island nations under its Act East policy.
India-Samoa Relations Strengthened
In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs conveyed India's felicitations to the government and people of Samoa. The outreach aligns with the pledges made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at FIPIC III, which focused on enhancing cooperation in areas such as climate change, renewable energy, and capacity building.
FIPIC III Commitments
During the FIPIC III summit held in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, in May 2023, India announced several initiatives for Pacific Island countries, including a $12 million grant for community development projects and support for solar energy installations. The greeting to Samoa is part of these ongoing efforts.
Strategic Importance
Samoa, an independent nation in the South Pacific, has been a key partner for India in the region. The two countries have cooperated on various multilateral platforms, including the United Nations and the Pacific Islands Forum. India's commitment to Fiji, Papua New Guinea, and other island nations has also been reinforced through similar diplomatic gestures.
The move is seen as a continuation of India's proactive diplomacy in the Pacific, aimed at countering China's growing influence in the region. By adhering to its FIPIC III promises, India demonstrates reliability and a long-term vision for partnership with Pacific Island states.
Samoa celebrates its Independence Day on June 1, marking its freedom from New Zealand in 1962. India's timely greetings reflect the warmth of bilateral ties and the shared commitment to mutual development and prosperity.
