India and Indonesia deepened their strategic partnership during high-level talks held in New Delhi on June 7, 2026. The 8th India-Indonesia Joint Commission Meeting took place after a gap of four years, allowing both nations to review the full spectrum of their bilateral relationship.
Key Areas of Cooperation
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono discussed several key areas of cooperation under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. These included defence, maritime security, trade, digital connectivity, healthcare, critical minerals, tourism, and education. Jaishankar noted that the partnership has witnessed strong growth in recent years.
Regional and International Issues
Both sides also exchanged views on regional developments, Indo-Pacific cooperation, and strengthening India-ASEAN engagement. Sugiono expressed optimism about Prime Minister Narendra Modi's upcoming visit to Jakarta, calling it an important opportunity to further deepen bilateral ties.
Building on Recent Momentum
The meeting comes as both countries seek to expand strategic and economic cooperation, building on the momentum generated by recent high-level exchanges. This includes Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto's State Visit to India earlier this year. The discussions underscore the commitment of both nations to enhance their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership across multiple domains.
