Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Wednesday announced a special strategic partnership between India and Italy, marking a significant milestone in bilateral relations. The announcement came after a bilateral meeting held in New Delhi, where both leaders discussed a wide range of issues including defense, trade, technology, and climate change.
Key Highlights of the Partnership
The special strategic partnership aims to elevate the existing bilateral ties to a new level. Both leaders emphasized the importance of cooperation in defense and security, with a focus on joint exercises, technology transfer, and counter-terrorism efforts. In the economic sphere, they agreed to boost trade and investment, particularly in sectors such as renewable energy, infrastructure, and digital technology.
Defense and Security Cooperation
India and Italy will enhance military-to-military cooperation, including joint naval exercises and training programs. They also agreed to collaborate on cybersecurity and maritime security in the Indian Ocean region. PM Modi stated that the partnership would contribute to regional peace and stability.
Trade and Economic Ties
Both leaders expressed satisfaction with the growing trade volume, which has crossed $15 billion. They set a target to double bilateral trade in the next five years. Italian companies are expected to invest in India's infrastructure projects, including smart cities and high-speed rail. India will also facilitate Italian investments in the manufacturing sector under the Make in India initiative.
Cultural and People-to-People Ties
PM Modi and PM Meloni launched a joint cultural exchange program to promote tourism and academic collaboration. They also announced a new visa facilitation agreement to ease travel for business and tourism. The Italian PM invited Indian students to pursue higher education in Italy, offering scholarships in STEM fields.
Climate Change and Renewable Energy
Both countries committed to working together on climate action, with a focus on solar energy and green hydrogen. Italy will support India's target of achieving 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030. They also agreed to collaborate on disaster management and environmental conservation.
PM Meloni described the partnership as a historic step, stating that Italy views India as a key partner in Asia. PM Modi highlighted the shared values of democracy and rule of law, and expressed confidence that the partnership will benefit both nations and the world.
The meeting also saw the signing of several agreements, including a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in space exploration and artificial intelligence. The two leaders agreed to hold annual summits to review progress.
This special strategic partnership is expected to strengthen India's ties with the European Union, as Italy is a founding member of the bloc. Analysts see this as a move to counterbalance China's influence in the region.
