India's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj, on Monday strongly condemned any actions targeting commercial shipping and impeding navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, calling such acts "unacceptable" and a threat to global maritime security.
India's Stance on Maritime Security
Speaking at a UN Security Council briefing on the situation in the Persian Gulf, Kamboj reiterated India's firm commitment to the freedom of navigation and the protection of international trade routes. She emphasized that the Strait of Hormuz is a vital waterway for global energy supplies and commerce, and any disruption there would have severe consequences for the world economy.
Call for Restraint and Diplomacy
The Indian envoy urged all parties involved to exercise restraint and resolve differences through diplomatic channels. "India has consistently advocated for peaceful resolution of conflicts and respect for international law. We call upon all nations to ensure the safety and security of maritime navigation in accordance with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS)," she stated.
Impact on Global Economy
Kamboj highlighted that approximately 20% of the world's oil passes through the Strait of Hormuz, making it a critical chokepoint. Any instability in the region could lead to spikes in energy prices and disrupt global supply chains, affecting countries far beyond the immediate region. She stressed that the international community must work collectively to prevent any escalation.
India's Role in Maritime Security
India has been actively contributing to maritime security in the Indian Ocean region, including through anti-piracy operations and naval exercises. The envoy underscored India's readiness to cooperate with other nations to ensure safe passage for commercial vessels. "India remains committed to upholding the rules-based international order and will continue to play a constructive role in maintaining peace and stability in the maritime domain," she added.
Response to Recent Incidents
The statement comes amid rising tensions in the Persian Gulf following a series of attacks on oil tankers and cargo ships near the Strait of Hormuz. While Kamboj did not directly name any country, she made it clear that India views any interference with commercial shipping as a violation of international norms. She called for a transparent investigation into recent incidents and urged all parties to avoid actions that could further destabilize the region.
International Support
Several other UN Security Council members echoed India's concerns during the briefing. The United States, United Kingdom, and France also condemned the attacks and called for enhanced maritime security cooperation. Russia and China, meanwhile, emphasized the need for dialogue and de-escalation. Kamboj concluded by reiterating India's support for a peaceful and stable Gulf region, which is essential for global prosperity.
