India and Vietnam have concluded a series of high-level talks, with the outcomes reflecting a significant expansion in the scope of their bilateral partnership, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Friday. The discussions, which covered a wide range of areas including defense, trade, and regional cooperation, underscored the growing strategic convergence between the two nations.
Enhanced Strategic Partnership
The talks, held in New Delhi, were co-chaired by Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister Pham Binh Minh. Both sides reviewed the progress in their comprehensive strategic partnership and identified new areas of collaboration. The MEA spokesperson stated that the outcomes of the talks demonstrate a new level of ambition in the relationship, reflecting the shared vision for peace, stability, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.
Defense and Security Cooperation
Defense cooperation was a key focus, with both countries agreeing to enhance joint military exercises, capacity building, and information sharing. They also discussed maritime security, emphasizing the importance of freedom of navigation and overflight in the South China Sea. India reiterated its support for Vietnam's stance on the peaceful resolution of disputes in accordance with international law, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
Trade and Economic Ties
On the economic front, the two sides explored ways to boost bilateral trade, which has grown steadily but remains below potential. They agreed to work towards a more balanced trade relationship and to facilitate greater investment flows. India and Vietnam also discussed cooperation in sectors such as digital technology, renewable energy, and infrastructure development.
Regional and Multilateral Cooperation
The talks also covered regional and multilateral issues, with both countries reaffirming their commitment to ASEAN centrality and the ASEAN-India Strategic Partnership. They exchanged views on the Indo-Pacific region and agreed to coordinate closely in forums such as the United Nations, the East Asia Summit, and the Mekong-Ganga Cooperation.
The MEA emphasized that the outcomes of the talks reflect the shared ambition of India and Vietnam to take their relationship to new heights, building on the strong foundation of historical and cultural ties. The next round of talks is expected to be held in Vietnam at a mutually convenient date.
