External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Tuesday underscored the importance of the Indo-Pacific region as a key driver for global economic growth, while addressing the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad) meeting. He called for fostering 'trusted' partnerships among member nations to ensure maritime security and promote economic choices in the region.
Quad's Role in Maritime Security
Speaking at the Quad meet, Jaishankar emphasized that the Quad must work collectively to safeguard maritime security and uphold a rules-based order in the Indo-Pacific. He highlighted the need for collaborative efforts to address challenges such as illegal fishing, piracy, and territorial disputes that threaten regional stability.
Economic Choices and Growth
The minister stressed that the Indo-Pacific should remain a driver for global growth, urging Quad members—India, the United States, Japan, and Australia—to strengthen economic partnerships. He called for initiatives that promote supply chain resilience, infrastructure development, and digital connectivity, ensuring that the region benefits from open and inclusive economic frameworks.
Jaishankar's remarks come amid growing geopolitical tensions in the region, with the Quad aiming to counter China's expanding influence. The meeting also touched upon cooperation in areas such as climate change, health security, and emerging technologies.
The Quad, which has evolved into a key strategic forum, continues to focus on ensuring a free and open Indo-Pacific. Jaishankar's call for 'trusted' partnerships underscores the need for transparency and mutual trust among member states to address common challenges effectively.
