External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar held a significant meeting with Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai (Phuangketkeow) on Tuesday, focusing on strengthening India-Thailand cooperation across multiple sectors. The talks, held in New Delhi, covered a wide range of bilateral issues, including trade, investment, defense, and cultural exchanges.
Key Areas of Discussion
The two leaders reviewed the progress of ongoing initiatives and explored new avenues for collaboration. Both sides emphasized the importance of enhancing connectivity, particularly through the India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway project, which is expected to boost trade and people-to-people ties. They also discussed ways to deepen cooperation in the digital economy, fintech, and renewable energy sectors.
Defense and Security Cooperation
Jaishankar and Phuangketkeow reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening defense and security ties, including joint military exercises and intelligence sharing. They also exchanged views on regional security challenges, such as maritime security in the Indo-Pacific region, and agreed to work together to ensure a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific.
Cultural and People-to-People Ties
The ministers highlighted the rich cultural heritage shared by India and Thailand, rooted in Buddhism and ancient trade links. They discussed measures to promote tourism, educational exchanges, and cultural festivals to further strengthen bilateral relations. Both sides expressed satisfaction with the growing number of Indian tourists visiting Thailand and Thai students studying in India.
Regional and Global Cooperation
The meeting also touched upon multilateral cooperation within frameworks such as ASEAN, BIMSTEC, and the United Nations. Jaishankar and Phuangketkeow agreed to coordinate positions on issues of mutual interest, including climate change, sustainable development, and counter-terrorism. They underscored the importance of a rules-based international order and respect for national sovereignty.
This meeting is part of India's ongoing efforts to deepen its engagement with Southeast Asian nations under its Act East Policy. The Thai Deputy PM's visit is expected to pave the way for further high-level exchanges and concrete outcomes in the coming months.
