Karnataka's Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre has directed officials to formulate a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for the safety of trekkers and tourists visiting elephant livestock camps and ecotourism trekking routes. The decision comes in the wake of a tragic incident in Kodagu district, where a tourist lost his life.
Immediate Suspension of Trekking Operations
The minister announced that all trekking operations in elephant habitats should be temporarily suspended until the SOP is fully enforced. This measure aims to prevent further accidents and ensure that safety protocols are strictly followed before any treks resume.
Background of the Incident
The death occurred when a tourist reportedly came too close to an elephant in a livestock camp. The incident has raised serious concerns about the lack of safety measures for visitors in these areas. Elephants, especially those in camps, can be unpredictable, and tourists often underestimate the risks involved.
Components of the SOP
While the exact details of the SOP are yet to be drafted, the minister emphasized the need for clear guidelines covering:
- Tourist conduct near elephant camps and during treks
- Mandatory safety briefings before any activity
- Designated safe zones and restricted areas
- Emergency response protocols in case of animal encounters
Enforcement and Monitoring
Khandre instructed forest officials to ensure strict compliance with the SOP once it is prepared. He also called for regular monitoring of trekking routes and camps to prevent unauthorized access. The temporary suspension of treks will remain in effect until all safety measures are in place and staff are adequately trained.
This incident highlights the delicate balance between promoting ecotourism and ensuring the safety of both tourists and wildlife. The Karnataka Forest Department is expected to release the SOP within a week, after which trekking operations may resume under the new guidelines.
