India is a land of diversity, known for its vibrant cultures, colorful traditions, and unique biodiversity. Among its many wonders lies the mysterious twin village of Kodinhi in Kerala, where the birth rate of twins is astonishingly high compared to the rest of the country.
The Twin Town of India
Located in the Mallapuram district of Kerala, Kodinhi is a small village with a population of about 2,000. It gained global attention when residents noticed an unusually high number of twin births. According to a study published in the Journal of Applied Dental and Medical Sciences, Kodinhi records about 35 twins per 1,000 births, while the national average in India is only 4 per 1,000, and the global average is 8 per 1,000. Between 2011 and 2016 alone, 60 pairs of twins were born, and the rate continues to rise. As of 2016, the village had approximately 204 pairs of twins and two sets of triplets, with 79 pairs under the age of 10. What puzzles scientists further is that even women who marry outside the village and men who marry into Kodinhi sometimes have twins, adding to the mystery.
A Boon from God?
Local residents have their own explanations for the phenomenon. Many believe that the high twin birth rate is a blessing from a local deity, while others attribute it to special qualities of the village's water or environment. These spiritual and cultural beliefs are deeply ingrained in daily life, giving the phenomenon a personal and emotional significance for the community.
Other High Twin Birth Rate Villages
Kodinhi is not alone in experiencing a high twin birth rate. Similar clusters have been reported in Cândido Godói, Brazil, and Igbo-Ora, Nigeria. In Igbo-Ora, researchers have suggested that certain chemicals in the peel of a locally consumed tuber might influence twin conceptions, though the evidence remains tentative.
Celebrating the Twin Phenomenon
Kodinhi celebrates its uniqueness with an annual twin festival, where families of twins gather to share stories and celebrate their bond. In 2008, around 30 pairs of twins and their families formed the Twin and Kins Association, India's first twin-focused support group, to address education, health, and social issues related to twins. Over time, this association has evolved into a strong support network, transforming a biological mystery into a positive social and cultural force.
