In a special festive announcement, the Kolkata Metro has decided to extend its services on Christmas Day, December 25, 2025. This move is aimed at accommodating the massive influx of revellers expected to throng the city's iconic celebration hubs, particularly Park Street and central Kolkata.
Special Metro Schedule for Christmas Day
Deviating from its standard holiday operations, the Metro will run additional and late-night trains on its two major corridors: the Blue Line (North-South) and the Green Line (East-West). Services will commence at their regular morning times. The first Blue Line train will depart at 6:50 am from both Noapara and Shahid Khudiram stations. On the Green Line, the first service will start at 6:39 am from Sector V.
The highlight is the extended late-night schedule. The final Blue Line train will leave from Shahid Khudiram at 10:30 pm, while the last service from Dakshineswar will be at 10:23 pm. For the Green Line, most services will conclude by 9:55 pm from both Sector V and Howrah Maidan. However, an additional special service will run from Howrah Maidan to Central Park at 10:20 pm to manage the post-carnival rush.
Increased Frequency to Handle Festive Crowds
To ensure smooth commuting, the frequency of trains will be significantly increased during peak hours. On the Blue Line (Dakshineswar–Shahid Khudiram), a total of 224 services will operate throughout the day. Between 2:40 pm and 8:30 pm, trains will run at intervals of just seven minutes to cater to the afternoon and evening rush.
Similarly, the Green Line (Howrah Maidan–Salt Lake Sector V) will operate 201 services. During its peak period from 4:25 pm to 8:30 pm, the waiting time between trains will be reduced to six minutes.
Why the Extra Services Are Essential
The special schedule is a direct response to Kolkata's legendary Christmas celebrations. Every year, the stretch encompassing Park Street, Maidan, and Esplanade transforms into a gigantic open-air carnival, attracting lakhs of people from across the city and beyond.
Park Street, famously known as the city's "Christmas Street," becomes a pedestrian-only zone. Crowds gather to admire the spectacular themed lighting at Allen Park and visit historic eateries like Flurys and Trincas. The Maidan and Esplanade areas also see huge gatherings for winter picnics and visits to landmarks such as the Victoria Memorial and St. Paul's Cathedral.
Commuters using the Park Street Metro station should be prepared for heavy security arrangements and likely one-way pedestrian movement to manage the sea of people. Meanwhile, normal services will continue on the Yellow, Purple, and Orange Lines of the Metro network. The two direct services from Jai Hind Bimanbandar to Shahid Khudiram (via Noapara) will also operate as per their usual schedule.
