The long-standing deadlock over the operation of the Kumedi Inter-State Bus Terminal (ISBT) in Indore is likely to be resolved soon, as two major agencies have shown keen interest in managing the terminal.
Although construction of the Kumedi ISBT was completed nearly a year and a half ago, it remained non-functional because no agency was available to manage its operations. Previous attempts to appoint an agency failed as either no bidders came forward or they were unable to meet the technical requirements.
Indore Development Authority (IDA) officials confirmed that the technical scrutiny of the current bids has been completed. The financial bids are scheduled to be opened soon, which will determine the final selection and the terms of operation.
"The activation of this terminal is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion within the city centre. Furthermore, it will serve as a vital hub for pilgrims during the Simhastha Mahakumbh in Ujjain. A key feature of the ISBT is its direct connectivity with the Indore Metro, ensuring seamless transit for passengers," said IDA CEO Parikshit Zade.
IDA officials are optimistic that with the appointment of an experienced agency, bus operations from Kumedi ISBT will commence shortly.
Key Features of Kumedi ISBT
- State-of-the-art amenities: The terminal is fully air-conditioned with 32 dedicated boarding and de-boarding points.
- High capacity: Designed to handle 1,440 buses daily and approximately 80,000 passengers annually.
- Parking facilities: Extensive parking for two-wheelers and four-wheelers.
The terminal is expected to ease congestion in Indore's city centre and provide a modern transit experience for passengers, including those travelling for the Simhastha Mahakumbh. With direct metro connectivity, commuters will enjoy seamless intermodal transfers.
