Low-Hanging Wires Threaten Elephants in Krishnagiri Forest

Low-Hanging Electric Wires Endanger Elephants in Denkanikottai Forest

In the Thadikal area of Denkanikottai reserve forest in Krishnagiri district, low-lying electric wires along a crucial elephant migration route are posing a serious threat to the lives of these majestic animals. The reserve forest is home to more than 50 elephants, which have begun migrating to the Chinnaru reservoir area near Thadikal in the Cauvery North Wildlife Sanctuary in search of water and food. These resources have become scarce in the Denkanikottai forest due to the ongoing severe drought.

Villagers Raise Alarm Over Electrocution Risk

Local resident M Dhinakaran highlighted the danger, stating that the wires near Thadikal Muniyappan Temple are positioned at a height that can be easily touched by hand. He warned that elephants passing through this stretch could inadvertently come into contact with the live wires, leading to fatal electrocution. Villagers noted that elephants frequently visit the Chinnaru reservoir area in large numbers, making the issue even more critical.

According to the villagers, similar low-lying electric wires have caused elephant deaths in the past. They urged authorities to take immediate action to address the problem. Another villager emphasized, "The forest department should inspect the low-lying electric wires and take steps to correct their height. The electricity board should also extend its cooperation."
