Maharashtra Forest Department Announces Cash Reward in Monkey Shooting Case

The Maharashtra forest department has taken a decisive step in a disturbing wildlife crime by announcing a cash reward of Rs 25,000. This reward is offered to anyone who provides vital clues or information regarding an unknown individual responsible for shooting three Bonnet macaques with arrows in the Thane region. The incident has sparked widespread concern among wildlife conservationists and local authorities, highlighting the urgent need to protect these vulnerable species.

Investigation Focuses on Archery Training Academies

In a proactive move to solve this case, forest officials, along with team members from the Resqink Association for Wildlife Welfare (RAWW), have already visited three archery training academies located in the Yeoor area. During these visits, they questioned staff members extensively about the type of arrows used in the shooting. Pawan Sharma, the honorary wildlife warden and founder of RAWW, emphasized the importance of this line of inquiry. He stated, "The arrows used have certain markings on them which can help us locate as to which training school for archery was using these types of arrows." This detailed examination aims to trace the origin of the weapons and identify the perpetrator behind this cruel act.

Bonnet Macaques: A Highly Protected Species

Bonnet macaques are classified as a highly protected wildlife species under Schedule 1 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act. This legal status underscores the severity of the crime and the importance of bringing the culprit to justice. The shooting not only violates wildlife protection laws but also poses a threat to biodiversity in the region. Authorities are committed to ensuring that such incidents are thoroughly investigated to deter future offenses and safeguard these animals.
