Mizoram Hits Record 35.8°C in Siaha District

Aizawl: Mizoram has been experiencing severe heatwave conditions, with the mercury soaring to an unprecedented 35.8 degrees Celsius in Siaha district, located in the southern part of the state, on Friday. This information was provided by the Aizawl Meteorological Centre of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). The centre stated on Sunday that this marks a record high temperature for the region in the month of June.

Heatwave Conditions in Aizawl

Residents of Aizawl also faced intense heat between June 2 and 6, as the temperature soared to a maximum of over 30 degrees Celsius on Wednesday and Friday. The lowest maximum temperature during this period ranged between 26 and 29 degrees Celsius, while minimum temperatures touched 20 to 21 degrees Celsius. These conditions made it difficult for residents to sleep at night without air conditioning.

Monsoon Advancement

Pu Sudheer Kumar Dwivedi, the director of the Aizawl Meteorological Centre, reported that the southwest monsoon has further advanced into Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and parts of Tripura, Assam, and Arunachal Pradesh on Sunday. Dwivedi noted that the southwest monsoon arrived on June 4, which is four days later than the normal onset date and later than the initial prediction of May 26.

Weather Forecast for Northeast India

With the monsoon's arrival in the northeast, the IMD predicts fairly widespread to widespread rainfall over Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura from June 7 to 13. Additionally, isolated thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds with speeds ranging from 40-50 kmph to 60 kmph are likely over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura on June 7 and during June 10-11.

The IMD further forecasts the possibility of isolated very heavy rainfall over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura between June 9 and 13.
