In a major crackdown on drug trafficking, police in Saitual district, which borders Manipur, seized 45.871 kilograms of opium fluid on the outskirts of Keifang town on Tuesday. Two individuals were arrested in connection with the seizure, according to a press statement issued on Wednesday by H Ramthlengliana, Inspector General of Police and Chief Public Relations Officer of the state police.
Details of the Seizure
Ramthlengliana stated that a car with Uttar Pradesh registration was intercepted by the Saitual Police team. The vehicle was driven by Somraj, 32, and was traveling from Manipur towards Aizawl. Upon inspection, police recovered 71 packets of opium fluid. In addition to the driver, Kailash, 28, a resident of Narsing Nagar, Dhawa-1, Jodhpur, Rajasthan, was also arrested. The seized contraband has an estimated illicit market value of approximately Rs 2.29 crore. A criminal case under Section 18(b)/25/29 of the Narcotic Drugs & Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 has been registered at Saitual Police Station, and further investigation is underway.
Second Drug Bust in Champhai
In a separate operation, police officials in Champhai district, which borders Myanmar, seized 29 grams of heroin on Monday. The heroin was concealed inside a running shoe allegedly belonging to Vanlalnghaka, 36, of Tualcheng village, Champhai district. The vehicle in which Vanlalnghaka was traveling was stopped at the Khankawn Police check gate on the western outskirts of Champhai town. A case under Section 21(b) of the Narcotic Drugs & Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 has been registered at Champhai Police Station.
These operations underscore the ongoing efforts by Mizoram Police to combat drug trafficking along the state's borders. The authorities have intensified surveillance and checkpoints to curb the inflow of narcotics from neighboring states and countries.
