Modi's Australia, NZ Visit to Bolster Ties: Former Envoy

Former diplomat Vidya Bhushan Soni stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's upcoming visit to Australia and New Zealand will renew India's regional links and emphasize maritime security, reflecting the Act East Policy in action. Speaking to ANI, Soni noted that Australia and New Zealand are 'a little disappointed by the lack of warmth in US policies towards the Pacific region,' making India's engagement crucial.

Strengthening Bilateral Ties

Soni highlighted the growing Indian diaspora in Australia over the past three to four decades, which now plays a significant role in society. He emphasized that renewing ties with both nations is vital for India's strategic interests. The visit, scheduled from July 8-11, 2026, includes stops in Australia and New Zealand at the invitations of Prime Ministers Anthony Albanese and Christopher Luxon respectively.

Maritime Security Focus

According to Soni, 'Safety and security, maritime security is the most important sector from their point of view and from our point of view. There should be free movement. Sea lanes must not be overshadowed by the military presence of the Chinese.' He underscored that Australia will be very important in this context, and the visit will reassure both countries of India's interest in the region.

Trade Agreement with New Zealand

For the New Zealand leg, Soni noted that PM Modi's historic visit comes after the trade agreement signed between New Delhi and Wellington last year. He stated that the agreement 'would open a plethora of opportunities for the two countries,' further cementing the Act East Policy in action.

Visit Schedule and Agenda

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, PM Modi will visit Australia from July 8-10 and New Zealand from July 10-11. The agenda includes reviewing the entire bilateral partnership, interactions with the Indian diaspora, and engagements with key business and sports personalities.
