MP Extends Teachers' Summer Vacation by One Week Due to Heatwave

The Madhya Pradesh government has extended the summer vacation for teachers by one week in response to the ongoing severe heatwave conditions across the state. The new academic session for students will commence on June 16, as announced by officials on Sunday.

Revised Reporting Date for Teachers

An official order from the School Education Department has postponed the teacher reporting date from June 1 to June 7. The decision was taken to safeguard the health of teaching staff amidst prolonged high temperatures, which have exceeded 42 degrees Celsius in several districts.

The department noted that teachers are currently engaged in census duties and board examination-related work. The extension allows them to complete these administrative tasks without exposure to peak daytime heat.

Official Statement on the Decision

“The decision has been taken keeping in mind the health of the teachers and the prevailing weather conditions,” the Department of Public Instruction stated in a release. The move aims to ensure that teachers are well-prepared for the upcoming term.

Academic Year Start for Students

Schools will welcome students when the academic year begins on June 16. On this day, the state will also launch its School Chalen Hum (Let’s Go to School) campaign and the Shala Prarambh Utsav (School Commencement Festival), according to officials.

Education authorities have emphasized that the staggered schedule will enable teachers to complete essential tasks related to examinations and the census while avoiding the intense heat. Local education officers have been instructed to monitor conditions and make necessary arrangements to ensure a safe reopening of schools.

Broader Context of Heatwave Impact

The extension comes amid growing concerns over the impact of the severe heatwave on public services and vulnerable populations across Madhya Pradesh. Meteorological offices have warned that high temperatures may persist in some regions, prompting authorities to review relief measures and advisories for schools and other institutions.

This proactive step by the state government underscores its commitment to prioritizing the health and well-being of educators while maintaining the academic calendar. The staggered approach is expected to facilitate a smoother transition into the new session.
