Mumbai airport has successfully concluded its annual pre-monsoon runway maintenance exercise, bringing both runways back to full operational capacity after a six-hour closure window on Thursday. The airport suspended flight movements from 11 am to 5 pm to facilitate the essential upkeep.
Scope of Maintenance Work
The comprehensive maintenance covered inspection and strengthening work on runway 09/27 and runway 14/32. Activities included pavement maintenance, rubber removal, electrical checks, drain cleaning, and inspection of over 3,000 runway lights along with associated cable networks. Technical teams also examined runway intersections and systems related to lighting, information technology, and navigational support to ensure uninterrupted performance during the rainy season, according to an airport spokesperson.
Planning and Coordination
The planning for this exercise began six months in advance, with close coordination among airlines to minimize disruption and allow schedule realignment. Mumbai airport handles over 950 air traffic movements daily, making meticulous planning crucial to avoid significant delays.
With the maintenance complete, the airport is well-prepared to handle monsoon weather challenges, ensuring safe and efficient operations for passengers and airlines alike.
