A car carrying pilgrims from Maharashtra plunged into a gorge on the Kedarnath National Highway on Tuesday, but all occupants were rescued safely, according to officials.
Incident Details
The accident occurred near the village of Sitapur on the Rudraprayag-Kedarnath highway when the vehicle skidded off the road and fell into a deep gorge. The car was carrying six pilgrims from Maharashtra who were en route to the Kedarnath shrine.
Local residents and police immediately launched a rescue operation. The district disaster management team and emergency services also reached the spot. All six occupants were pulled out from the wreckage and provided first aid. They were later taken to a nearby hospital for medical examination.
Rescue Operation
The rescue operation was challenging due to the steep terrain and the depth of the gorge. Rescuers used ropes and stretchers to bring the victims to safety. The injured were reported to be in stable condition, with minor injuries. The vehicle was badly damaged.
Authorities have initiated an investigation into the cause of the accident. Preliminary reports suggest that the driver may have lost control due to a sharp turn on the narrow, winding road. The Kedarnath highway is known for its treacherous stretches, especially during the pilgrimage season.
The pilgrims were identified as residents of various districts in Maharashtra. Their families have been informed about the incident. The district administration has assured all necessary assistance to the pilgrims.
Road Safety Concerns
This incident highlights the risks associated with traveling on mountainous roads in Uttarakhand, particularly during the monsoon season when landslides and poor visibility are common. The state government has been urged to improve road safety measures on pilgrimage routes.
Local authorities have advised pilgrims to exercise caution while traveling and to follow traffic rules. They also recommend using vehicles with proper safety features and hiring experienced drivers familiar with the terrain.
