Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's gesture of presenting an Eri Silk stole to Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and a sample of Assam's Joha rice to Qu Dongyu, Director General of the Food and Agriculture Organisation, not only reflects his affection for Assam but also elevates the state's heritage and influence on the global stage.
Assam's Unique Products Recognized
In a post on his X handle, Sarma wrote: "Assam shines at the global diplomatic arena. During his visit to Italy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi gifted an Eri Silk stole to Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni." He further explained that Eri silk, also known as peace silk, is unique to Assam. It is obtained in a cruelty-free manner and represents the state's finest weaving traditions.
Additionally, the Joha rice sample gifted to Qu Dongyu is a small-grain rice variety unique to Assam, known for its rich aroma. These gifts showcase the cultural and agricultural richness of the region.
Other Gifts During the Five-Nation Tour
Besides the Eri Silk stole for the Italian PM, PM Modi gifted a Madhubani painting with a fish motif to Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten and a Ladakhi pure wool stole to Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson during his five-nation tour. He also presented Kesar mangoes and Meghalaya pineapples to UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Meloni additionally received a Shirui Lily silk stole, inspired by the misty heights of Shirui Kashong peak in Manipur.
