Prime Minister Narendra Modi's state visit to Indonesia on July 7, 2026, culminated in the signing of 20 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) spanning defense, trade, education, and cultural cooperation. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) detailed the agreements after bilateral and delegation-level engagements between PM Modi and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto. Key highlights include cooperation on the BrahMos missile system and the establishment of an Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Bangalore branch campus at the Singhasari Special Economic Zone (SEZ).
Defense and Maritime Security Agreements
A major outcome was the cooperation on the BrahMos missile system, which demonstrates the capability of India's defense industry and strengthens the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. The agreement boosts indigenous defense manufacturing, innovation, and global competitiveness. Additionally, an Air-to-Air Missile Cooperation Agreement was signed to enhance India's defense exports and technology collaboration, supporting the Make-in-India initiative. The extension of the MoU and Implementation Arrangement on Maritime Safety and Security Cooperation strengthens coordination between the coast guards of both countries, improving maritime domain awareness, search and rescue, and capacity building in the Indo-Pacific.
Strategic Joint Ventures and Mineral Cooperation
A strategic joint venture between Steel Authority of India (SAIL) and PT Krakatau Steel was established for a stainless-steel slab manufacturing facility in Indonesia, promoting job creation and industrial development. The MoU on Cooperation in the field of Minerals and Technology of Steel Supply Chain encourages investments in mining, access to advanced processing technologies, and joint studies to strengthen critical mineral supply chains. Another MoU between the Non-Ferrous Materials Technology Development Centre (NFTDC), Midwest Ltds., and PT PERMINAS focuses on developing rare earth magnets, diversifying supply chains for rare earths and critical minerals.
Space and Cultural Cooperation
The extension of the Framework Agreement on Cooperation in Exploration and Uses of Outer Space for Peaceful Purposes reinforces a three-decade-long space partnership, promoting joint research and technology sharing. India also extended assistance for the conservation and restoration of the Prambanan Temple Complex in Yogyakarta, under the 'Vikas bhi Virasat bhi' initiative, strengthening cultural diplomacy and preserving shared heritage.
Agriculture, Health, and Telecom MoUs
An MoU on Cooperation in Agriculture and Allied Sectors advances sustainable agriculture, joint research, and food security. India also supplied 100 tonnes of high-quality DWR 162 wheat seeds to support Indonesia's food security. In healthcare, an MoU between the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) and Indonesia's BPOM enhances regulatory cooperation and market access for Indian medical products. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) signed an agreement with its Indonesian counterpart to share best practices and tech-based early warning systems. An MoU on Telecommunications Technologies and Services improves access to advanced telecom systems, including wireless and quantum technologies.
Education and Digital Cooperation
A landmark agreement was the setting up of an IIM Bangalore branch campus at the Singhasari SEZ, showcasing India's academic excellence globally. The MoU between the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) and Indonesia Open Network (ION) promotes cooperation in Digital Public Infrastructure, making services more accessible. The Election Commission of India (ECI) also signed an MoU with Indonesia's General Elections Commission (KPU) to share knowledge and best practices.
