PM Modi's Slovakia Visit Historic, Strategic, Symbolic: Envoy

Slovak Ambassador to India Robert Maxian has described Prime Minister Narendra Modi's upcoming three-day visit to Slovakia as "historic, strategic and symbolic." PM Modi is scheduled to visit the Slovak Republic from June 14 to 16, marking the first-ever visit by an Indian Prime Minister since Slovakia's independence in 1993.

First In-Person Meeting of Prime Ministers

Ambassador Maxian noted that this will be the first time the Prime Ministers of India and Slovakia meet in person. Speaking to ANI, he said, "It is indeed a historic visit. Prime Ministers of India and Slovakia have never met in person. So it is a historical, strategic and also symbolic visit." He added that the visit represents the evolution of high-level political dialogue initiated in 2022.

Strengthened Ties Since 2022

The ambassador highlighted that India-Slovakia ties have grown significantly since 2022 through regular high-level meetings. "In 2022, External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar visited Slovakia. From that point onwards, a very intensive political dialogue has started at the level of the ministries of external affairs," he said. The foreign ministers meet annually to address issues of common interest and crucial aspects of bilateral ties.

This political dialogue was further strengthened by President Droupadi Murmu's state visit to Slovakia in April 2025, which was the first presidential visit in 29 years. Maxian described it as "very historical and symbolic."

Comprehensive Cooperation Across Sectors

Maxian emphasized that India and Slovakia currently share strong and active relations across multiple domains, including business investment, cyber security, green energy, culture, and people-to-people ties. He expressed confidence that ongoing discussions will deepen cooperation and strengthen collaboration in multilateral forums.

"The relationship between India and Slovakia is very intensive as of now in all areas of joint cooperation, whether business investments, cyber security, green energy innovations, culture, or people-to-people contacts," he stated. "I'm sure that negotiations between both countries will cover all aspects of our mutual cooperation, including cooperation in multilateral fora. We are looking forward to in-depth discussions that will give a tremendous boost to our cooperation."

At the invitation of Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, PM Modi will undertake a State Visit to the Slovak Republic from June 14 to 16. This historic visit follows President Droupadi Murmu's state visit to Slovakia in April 2025 and Slovak President Peter Pellegrini's visit to India for the AI Impact Summit in February 2026.

The visit underscores the growing strategic partnership between India and Slovakia and is expected to further enhance bilateral ties in trade, technology, and global governance.
