The general body of Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has given its approval to proposals for extending the Metro network to the city's peripheral areas. Corporators have sanctioned a new route from Khadakwasla to Donaje, which is expected to benefit visitors heading to Sinhagad Fort and surrounding regions.
Similarly, a new Metro line from Katraj to Khed Shivapur has been approved, which is anticipated to connect the mass transit system to the proposed outer ring road. Additionally, new Metro connections from Katraj to Undri and from Wagholi to Lonikand have also received the green light.
Next Steps and Detailed Project Reports
In the subsequent phase, all these proposals will be forwarded to Maha Metro for the preparation of detailed project reports (DPRs). Corporators emphasized that the Metro will play a crucial role in managing mass transport in the near future. With two Metro routes already operational in the city's core areas, they stressed the need to develop new routes linking the city center to newly developing areas while sanctioning the extension proposals.
Officials' Statements
Shrinath Bhimale, chairman of PMC's standing committee, stated that the civic body will provide all necessary assistance to expedite the Metro projects. "We are conducting joint meetings with Metro officials and district authorities to fast-track the Metro network," he said.
An official from Maha Metro commented, "The major lines under phase-II include Khadakwasla to Hadapsar to Kharadi, and Nal Stop to Warje. Whatever new proposals the PMC and Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) hand over to us, Maha Metro will start the studies in phases."
