Russian fighter jets, heavy rocket launchers, helicopters, and advanced military hardware took center stage in Armenia's Republic Day celebrations, showcasing Moscow's enduring military footprint in the South Caucasus despite growing political strains between the two countries.
Parade Highlights Russian Military Hardware
Thousands watched as Su-30SM multirole fighter jets roared across the skies of Yerevan while TOS-1A Solntsepek heavy rocket launchers, Mi-17V helicopters, Su-25 attack aircraft, and other Russian-made systems rolled through Republic Square. More than 1,200 servicemen participated in the parade marking the anniversary of Armenia's declaration of independence in 1918.
Strategic Context of the Display
The display comes at a pivotal moment for Armenia. While Yerevan continues to maintain military and economic ties with Russia, it is also a strategic partner of the United States. This dual alignment reflects the complex geopolitical balancing act Armenia faces in the South Caucasus region.
The parade demonstrated Russia's continued influence in the region, but analysts note that Armenia's deepening relationship with the US could shift the balance of power. The presence of Russian hardware in the parade underscores the enduring military cooperation between Moscow and Yerevan, even as Armenia explores closer ties with Washington.
