Scooter Rider Injured After Elephant Encounter in Kodagu Coffee Plantation
A scooter rider was injured on Saturday after an unexpected encounter with a wild elephant in a coffee plantation near Kaimani, located in Ponnampet taluk of Kodagu district. The incident occurred as the rider was crossing the plantation area.
Details of the Incident
The injured individual has been identified as Armugam, a 65-year-old resident of Poojekal near Kutta. According to reports, Armugam lost control of his scooter and fell down upon seeing the elephant, sustaining injuries in the process. Fortunately, the elephant retreated back into the coffee plantation and did not charge at him, preventing a more serious outcome.
Swift Response by Forest Department
Forest department personnel from the Srimangala range, who were on patrol duty in the area, rushed to the spot immediately after the incident. They provided assistance and transported the injured Armugam to the Kutta Community Health Centre for medical treatment. Their prompt action was crucial in ensuring his safety.
Background and Precautionary Measures
This incident follows a tragic attack by a wild elephant on Wednesday in the same village, which resulted in the death of a grower. In response, Virajpet MLA Ajjikuttira Ponnanna has instructed the forest department to enhance vigilance. As a precautionary measure, personnel have been deployed to patrol main roads and monitor areas where elephants are reported to be present, based on information from the public.
In this context, the forest department has been actively conducting patrols, known as beats, on main roads with indications of wild elephant activity. A team led by Srimangala Range Forest Officer Aravind has been patrolling the Kutta-Kaimani area from 6 am to 8 pm daily to prevent further incidents and ensure public safety.
Safety Concerns in the Region
The repeated elephant encounters highlight ongoing safety concerns in Kodagu, where human-wildlife conflicts are becoming more frequent. Residents and authorities are urged to remain cautious, especially in plantation areas and along main roads where elephants may roam. The forest department continues to emphasize the importance of public cooperation in reporting elephant sightings to mitigate risks.
