In a significant move to boost tourism and strengthen bilateral ties, Sri Lanka has announced that Indian travelers are now eligible for free on-arrival visas. The decision, effective immediately, is part of Sri Lanka's broader strategy to attract more visitors from India, its largest source of tourists.
Details of the New Visa Policy
Under the new policy, Indian passport holders can obtain a free visa upon arrival at any entry point in Sri Lanka, including airports and seaports. The visa allows a stay of up to 30 days with double entry. This facility is available for tourism purposes only and is not applicable for business or other types of visits.
Eligibility and Process
To avail of the free on-arrival visa, Indian travelers must have a passport valid for at least six months from the date of arrival. They need to fill out an arrival card and present it along with their passport to immigration officials. No prior application or fee is required. The visa can be extended by applying to the Department of Immigration and Emigration in Sri Lanka.
Impact on Tourism
India is the largest source market for Sri Lankan tourism, accounting for nearly 20% of total tourist arrivals. In 2023, over 300,000 Indians visited Sri Lanka. The waiver of visa fees is expected to further increase these numbers, providing a boost to Sri Lanka's tourism industry, which has been recovering from the pandemic and economic challenges.
Strengthening Bilateral Relations
The visa waiver is also seen as a gesture of goodwill between the two neighboring countries. It comes at a time when Sri Lanka is seeking to deepen economic and cultural ties with India. The move is likely to facilitate easier people-to-people contact and promote mutual understanding.
Other Countries Eligible
Besides India, citizens of several other countries are also eligible for free on-arrival visas in Sri Lanka, including China, Russia, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia. This initiative is part of a pilot project that may be extended based on its success.
Travelers are advised to check the latest travel advisories and ensure they meet all entry requirements before traveling. The Sri Lankan government has emphasized that the visa waiver is for tourism purposes only and any violation of visa conditions may result in penalties.
