Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay has directed state officials to expedite legal proceedings in the ongoing Mekedatu dam dispute with Karnataka. The directive comes after the Supreme Court recently dismissed Tamil Nadu's review petition against an earlier ruling that only central government experts can determine the legal scope of the apex court's jurisdiction in the matter.
Background of the Dispute
The Mekedatu dam project, proposed by Karnataka across the Cauvery River, has been a contentious issue between the two southern states. Tamil Nadu has consistently opposed the project, arguing that it would violate existing water-sharing agreements and adversely affect its water supply.
Supreme Court's Stance
The Supreme Court had earlier ruled that the central government's expert committee has the sole authority to assess the legal aspects of the dam's construction. Tamil Nadu's subsequent review petition was dismissed, prompting the state to explore other legal avenues.
Chief Minister Vijay emphasized the need for swift action to protect Tamil Nadu's interests. He instructed the state's legal team to prepare a robust case and explore all possible legal remedies, including filing a fresh petition if necessary.
The Cauvery Water Management Authority and the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee are also expected to play a key role in resolving the dispute. Tamil Nadu has urged these bodies to ensure that Karnataka does not proceed with the project without proper clearance.
The Mekedatu dam issue remains a flashpoint in interstate water conflicts, with both states closely monitoring developments. Legal experts suggest that the matter could eventually reach a larger bench of the Supreme Court for final adjudication.
