Tigress Zeenat Gives Birth to Four Cubs in Odisha

Tigress Zeenat, who gained national attention after embarking on a nearly 300-kilometer journey across three states following her relocation, has given birth to four cubs in Odisha's Similipal Tiger Reserve. Forest Minister Ganesh Ram Singhkhuntia confirmed the development on Tuesday, stating that the cubs were delivered around 20 days ago and that both the mother and her offspring are in good health.

Birth of Four Cubs Marks Conservation Milestone

The tigress, along with another tigress named Jamuna, was translocated from Maharashtra's Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve to Similipal in November 2024 as part of efforts to strengthen the genetic diversity of the reserve's tiger population. At the time of relocation, Zeenat was three years old. The birth of the four cubs is seen as a significant achievement for wildlife conservation in the region.

Singhkhuntia stated, 'The cubs are under GPS-based monitoring and are safe. Zeenat is also healthy. This is very encouraging news for the reserve.' An image captured by a trap camera showed Zeenat carrying one of her cubs in her mouth, indicating her attentive care.

Zeenat's Remarkable Journey

Zeenat first drew national attention shortly after her relocation when she embarked on an extraordinary journey of nearly 300 kilometers across Odisha, Jharkhand, and West Bengal. She left Similipal on December 7, 2024, and traversed several forested corridors before being captured in West Bengal following a 21-day tracking operation. After being reintroduced into the wild in April this year, Zeenat was observed roaming with a resident male tiger named T-12, raising hopes among conservationists for successful breeding.

Government Hails Development

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi hailed the birth of the cubs as a proud milestone in the state's wildlife conservation journey. He said the successful birth reflects the conducive habitat created in Similipal Tiger Reserve. Majhi added that special measures have been taken by the Forest Department to ensure the safety of the tigress and her cubs, with their movements being continuously monitored.

'Thanks to the dedicated efforts of our forest staff and effective conservation policies, Odisha has established itself as a secure sanctuary for wildlife. Our government remains committed to preserving the ecological balance of Similipal and strengthening conservation initiatives further,' Majhi said.

Conservation Significance

The translocation of tigresses from Maharashtra to Odisha was part of a broader strategy to enhance the genetic pool of tigers in Similipal, which is one of India's premier tiger reserves. The birth of Zeenat's cubs is a positive indicator of the success of such relocation efforts and underscores the importance of maintaining genetic diversity in isolated tiger populations.

Wildlife experts have welcomed the news, noting that the cubs' birth not only boosts the tiger population in Similipal but also demonstrates the effectiveness of conservation measures in place. The GPS monitoring system will allow authorities to track the cubs' development and ensure their safety in the wild.
