The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast that the ongoing wet spell over North India will persist until May 6. The region has been experiencing continuous rainfall, thunderstorms, and hailstorms, which are expected to continue for the next few days.
Current Weather Conditions
According to the IMD, a Western Disturbance is currently active over the region, causing widespread precipitation. This weather system is likely to bring moderate to heavy rainfall, along with thunderstorms and lightning, to states including Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan. Some areas may also witness hailstorms.
Impact on Agriculture
The wet spell has raised concerns among farmers, particularly those with standing wheat crops. The IMD has advised farmers to delay harvesting and take necessary precautions to protect their produce. The rain could also affect other crops like mustard and vegetables.
Temperature Drop
Due to the overcast conditions and rainfall, maximum temperatures have dropped significantly across the region. Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 28 degrees Celsius, which is below the normal for this time of the year. Similar trends are observed in other northern cities.
Advisory for Residents
The IMD has urged residents to stay indoors during thunderstorms and avoid open areas. People are advised to secure loose objects that could be blown away by strong winds. Commuters should be cautious as waterlogging may occur in low-lying areas.
The wet spell is expected to weaken after May 6, with gradual improvement in weather conditions. However, the IMD will continue to monitor the situation and issue updates as necessary.
