Why Nations Send Their Troops to India for Unmatched Military Training
Why Nations Choose India for Military Training

The Indian Army has proven its worth in numerous conflicts and calamities. It has been involved in major combat operations, low-intensity combat operations, aid to civil authority, and Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR), among others.

The force delivers across the varied types of terrain found across India and beyond, ranging from the lush rainforests of the Andaman & Nicobar archipelago to the dry deserts of Rajasthan and the super high altitudes of the Karakoram. In a way, the army delivers across functions in any situation, from Sudan to the Commonwealth Games.

The Indian Army attributes its strength to its training and its ethos. In many interviews, soldiers and officers have often stated that they relied on their training to get out of difficult situations. It is for this reason that armies across the world turn to the Indian Army for training and joint exercises.

The Indian Army trains officers and soldiers from across the world in different institutions spread across the country. These foreign service personnel attend courses based on their seniority and role-specific requirements. Many of these students come from the global south, and this is a part of India's military diplomacy. The army imparts pre-conditioning training to these officers at the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun, and the Officer Training Academies located in Chennai and Gaya. Officers from foreign countries also attend the Young Officer's course, a foundational course where the student officer learns about the basics of his or her branch in the military, such as infantry, armour, artillery, engineers, air defence, etc.

Parallel professional streams exist for logistics, medical services, signals, and maintenance. Every functional requirement receives tailored instruction that aligns with operational needs.

"Other armies prefer to send their officers and men to India for training because of the professional standards of the Indian Army. The conduct of the Indian Armed Forces during Operation Sindoor was proof of this professionalism," an army source stated.

Professional courses such as Junior Command, Senior Command, Staff College, and Higher Command are offered to officers to equip them for the challenges they may face and for the positions they are expected to take up. The army also offers specific courses such as the Long Gunnery Staff Course, Long Air Defence Course, Higher Munitions Course, and a host of other branch-specific courses.

Student officers from other countries also receive instruction on niche topics such as mountain warfare, information warfare, counter-improvised explosive device techniques, managing logistics, signals, and a plethora of other critical support operations.

A defining feature of the Army's approach is a culture of continuous learning. Officers and soldiers cycle through progressive courses throughout their careers, ensuring skills remain current as technology and doctrine evolve. In preparing forces for conflict, strengthening national resilience, and building civic capacity, the Indian Army functions as a disciplined, mission-focused educator and a cornerstone of the country's human capital development.
