World Bank Project Boosts Tribal Infrastructure in Tripura

The Tripura government, with financial support from the World Bank, is implementing the Tripura Rural Economic Growth & Service Delivery Project (TRESP) to promote sustainable infrastructure development in tribal areas, Chief Minister Manik Saha announced on Wednesday.

Project Overview and Funding

In 2024, the state launched the Rs 1,400 crore project, with 80% of the funding secured through a World Bank loan. More than 25% of the work has been completed, and expenses incurred have been reimbursed. The project focuses on integrating environmental and social safeguards into infrastructure works across 23 tribal-dominated rural development blocks to support sustainable development, the Chief Minister said.

Key Components and Benefits

TRESP project director Subhasis Das stated that the initiative emphasizes responsible infrastructure planning to reduce ecological impact while ensuring long-term public benefits, including improved rural connectivity. He described TRESP as a multi-sector initiative aimed at enhancing connectivity, upgrading educational infrastructure, and creating livelihood opportunities in remote and tribal regions.

Under the project, 88 roads covering nearly 288 kilometers are planned, along with 16 new school infrastructures. Das added that these works are intended to improve transport access, educational facilities, and service delivery in underserved areas.

The project aligns with the state's commitment to sustainable development and inclusive growth, ensuring that tribal communities benefit from improved infrastructure without compromising environmental integrity.
