A tragic incident occurred at Saraiya Ghat in the Shivrajpur police station area of Kanpur on Sunday, where a young man lost his life while attempting to save a drowning woman during a Ganga bathing ritual. According to police reports, the incident unfolded when a woman ventured into deep water and began to struggle, prompting three individuals to be swept away by the strong current of the Ganges.
Rescue Efforts and Casualty
With the assistance of local divers and police personnel, two people were successfully rescued from the water. However, a young man whose condition was critical was rushed to Lala Lajpat Rai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival. The deceased has been identified as Raj Chaurasia, a 24-year-old resident of Karwalo Nagar, Afeem Kothi, under the Raipurwa police station area.
Sequence of Events
Raj Chaurasia had come to Saraiya Ghat with his family for a Ganga bath. Family members present included Yasi Chaurasia, Seema Chaurasia, Shanno Chaurasia, Jay Chaurasia, Gullu alias Amber Chaurasia, and Deepanti Chaurasia. While bathing, Deepanti went beyond the designated safety boundary, causing her foot to slip and leading to her drowning in the deep water. In a bid to save Deepanti, Raj Chaurasia immediately jumped into the Ganga, but he too began to drown due to the strong current. Attempting to rescue him, Amber alias Gunnu Chaurasia also entered the water and started drowning.
Police and Diver Response
Upon receiving information from the control room, the Shivrajpur police station in-charge arrived at the scene with a police force and beat in-charge sub-inspector Abhishek Singh. With the help of local divers, Deepanti (38) and Amber alias Gunnu Chaurasia (15) were safely rescued. Subsequently, Raj Chaurasia was located and pulled out of the water. The injured were sent to Community Health Centre Shivrajpur. Deepanti's condition was reported as normal, while doctors referred Raj Chaurasia to Kanpur due to his serious condition.
Final Outcome
According to lekhpal Rishabh Dubey, family members brought Raj Chaurasia in a critical condition to a private hospital in Kalyanpur, where doctors declared him dead. The incident highlights the dangers of strong currents during religious bathing and the risks taken by individuals attempting to rescue others.
