At least nine people, including two children, lost their lives when a freight train collided with a bus at a railway crossing in Zimbabwe, according to police and rail authorities.
Details of the Accident
The crash occurred in Triangle, a sugar-producing town in the southern part of the country. Police confirmed that the collision involved a freight train and a bus. National Railways of Zimbabwe spokesperson Andrew Kanambura issued a statement indicating that the bus driver failed to stop and check for oncoming trains before crossing the tracks, thereby violating railway safety regulations. He added that at least 25 other individuals sustained injuries in the incident.

Tuesday's accident comes less than a week after a minibus carrying schoolchildren caught fire in central Zimbabwe, resulting in seven fatalities. Road crashes are a frequent occurrence in Zimbabwe, where the road safety agency reports that a traffic accident happens every 15 minutes. On average, five people are killed and 38 are injured each day in such incidents.
Authorities continue to investigate the collision and urge all motorists to adhere to traffic and railway safety rules to prevent further tragedies.
