Visakhapatnam: There appears to be no relief from the heatwave conditions that have persisted for the past week across most parts of Andhra Pradesh. Despite thunderstorm activity, temperatures have not dropped significantly, and residents can expect no respite for at least another week.

Severe Heat on Monday

Parts of Andhra Pradesh experienced scorching heat on Monday, with maximum temperatures ranging between 40 degrees Celsius and 45 degrees Celsius. Bapatla, Gannavaram, Jangamaheswarapuram, Amaravati, and Machilipatnam reeled under heatwave conditions, while the rest of the state endured hot, humid, and highly uncomfortable weather.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Jangamaheswarapuram in Palnadu district recorded the highest temperature in the state at 45.5 degrees Celsius, followed by Bapatla at 45.4°C, Gannavaram at 45°C, Amaravati at 44.9°C, Machilipatnam at 44.2°C, and Nandigama at 44.1°C. Other locations in coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema regions experienced searing heat, with maximum temperatures settling between 35°C and 42°C.

APSDMA Data

The Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) reported that the state continues to grapple with heatwave conditions, with daytime temperatures exceeding 44°C in 14 districts on Monday. Kankipadu in Krishna district recorded the highest temperature at 48.1°C, followed by 46.4°C at Kuchinapudi in Bapatla district, and 46.3°C each at Ibrahimpatnam (NTR) and Piduguralla (Palnadu).

IMD Forecast

The IMD has forecast that severe heatwave conditions are likely in parts of Prakasam, Palnadu, Bapatla, Guntur, Krishna, West Godavari, and Konaseema districts on May 26 and 27. The remaining districts of coastal Andhra Pradesh will experience heatwave-like conditions. On May 28, more than 13 districts of coastal Andhra Pradesh are expected to face severe heatwave conditions.

The weather agency also stated that thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are likely at isolated places over coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema regions from May 26 to 28. Conditions are favorable for the further advance of the southwest monsoon into some more parts of the southwest and southeast Arabian Sea, the Comorin Area, the southwest, southeast, and east central Bay of Bengal, and the remaining parts of the Andaman Sea during the next two to three days.
