Banda Remains India's Hottest Spot Amid Escalating Heatwave in Uttar Pradesh

As heatwave-like conditions intensified across the region, Banda in Uttar Pradesh retained its status as the hottest location in the country for the second consecutive day on Friday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heatwave alert for Uttar Pradesh, warning residents of a further rise in temperatures over the coming days.

Defining a Heatwave and Current Conditions

A heatwave is officially declared when the maximum temperature exceeds normal levels by 4.5 to 6.4 degrees Celsius. Alternatively, it is announced when a city's maximum temperature reaches 45 degrees Celsius or above. On Friday, Banda sizzled at a scorching 45.4 degrees Celsius, which was 4.9 degrees above the normal range. Prayagraj followed closely as the second hottest, recording 44 degrees Celsius, 4.1 degrees above normal.

Widespread High Temperatures Across Uttar Pradesh

Numerous cities, primarily in the Bundelkhand region and eastern Uttar Pradesh, experienced their hottest days of this summer season. Some areas in the western parts of the state also reported elevated temperatures. Key recordings included:

  • Rae Bareli: 40.9 degrees Celsius
  • Mirzapur: 40.8 degrees Celsius
  • Orai: 40.6 degrees Celsius
  • Hardoi and Varanasi (AP): 40.5 degrees Celsius
  • Aligarh: 40.4 degrees Celsius
  • Kanpur city: 40 degrees Celsius

These temperatures were generally 3 to 4 degrees above normal levels, highlighting the severity of the heatwave.

Conditions in Lucknow and Meteorological Predictions

In Lucknow, the capital city, the maximum temperature held steady at 39.8 degrees Celsius, matching Thursday's reading. The minimum temperature was recorded at 21.5 degrees Celsius. While early mornings and late evenings offered some relief, afternoons proved harsh, with outdoor temperatures feeling like 42 to 43 degrees Celsius due to heat absorption by concrete structures.

The state meteorological department predicts that hot conditions will intensify in Lucknow. Saturday is expected to feature clear skies, with maximum and minimum temperatures projected around 41 and 22 degrees Celsius, respectively.

Expert Analysis on Weather Patterns

Senior scientist at the state meteorological department, Mohammad Danish, provided insights into the weather dynamics. He noted that light rainfall occurred in northwestern regions of Uttar Pradesh near Uttarakhand due to a western disturbance on Friday, but the rest of the state remained dry.

Danish explained: "Clear skies, intense solar radiation, and persistent dry westerly winds from the desert regions of Rajasthan have combined to push daytime temperatures sharply upward. An anticyclone over interior Maharashtra is expected to make weather conditions harsher in the next two to three days."

Health Advisories and Precautions

Authorities have issued advisories urging residents to avoid direct sun exposure during peak afternoon hours, stay hydrated, and take necessary precautions. As Uttar Pradesh heads towards more intense summer conditions in the coming days, these measures are crucial for public health and safety.

The escalating heatwave underscores the need for vigilance and preparedness across the state, with meteorological warnings indicating no immediate respite from the soaring temperatures.
