Gajendra Yadav, under Bagaha block, has planted more than 10 lakh saplings over the past 23 years, transforming vast stretches of land into thriving green cover. A Life Dedicated to Trees: Overcoming Health and Financial Hurdles
For Gajendra Yadav, trees are not just plants; they are cherished members of his family. His life revolves around nurturing and protecting the environment, a commitment that has remained steadfast despite significant personal challenges. Suffering from heart-related health issues and operating with limited financial resources, Yadav's determination has never faltered. He made the profound choice to remain unmarried, dedicating his entire existence to planting and caring for trees, viewing this as his life's true purpose.
His contributions have not gone unnoticed. In recognition of his exceptional work in environmental protection, Yadav was honored by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. This award acknowledged his relentless dedication and the positive impact his efforts have had on both society and the ecological balance of the area.
The Inspiring Origin: A Vow Born from Illness and Awareness
Recalling the pivotal moment that sparked his journey, Yadav shared, "In 1998, I went to work in the mining sector in Madhya Pradesh. There, I fell seriously ill and returned home, remaining bedridden for two years. During that time, I listened to various radio programmes, and hearing about global warming deeply worried me. At that moment, I made a vow: if I recovered, I would dedicate my entire life to trees and plants."
True to his word, since 2003, Yadav has been actively planting trees in numerous locations, including canal banks, farm footpaths, school premises, and the grounds of temples and mosques. He also encourages others to plant trees on their birthdays and frequently joins community members during plantation drives, fostering a culture of environmental stewardship.
Diverse Plantations and Community Impact
Over the years, Yadav has planted a wide variety of saplings, such as mango, guava, litchi, and jackfruit, among other species. Many of these have now matured into robust trees that provide fruits, shade, and fresh oxygen, significantly enhancing the region's ecological balance. His work has not only increased greenery but also raised environmental awareness among local residents, motivating them to participate in conservation efforts.
"Trees and plants are my family. My happiness and sorrow are connected with them. As long as I live, I will continue planting trees. Protecting nature is our collective responsibility," Yadav emphasized, reflecting his deep-seated passion.
Recognition from Officials and Community Leaders
Yadav's efforts have garnered appreciation from forest department officials and community members alike. Hemkant Rai, joint director of the Bihar State Biodiversity Board (BSBB), noted, "I served as the DFO of the Valmiki Tiger Reserve from 2014 to 2017 and later as the conservator of forests and director. During that period, Yadav actively participated in several schemes run by the forest department. He planted poplar saplings under the Social Forestry Scheme and also used his own money to plant saplings in public places."
Sakina Khatoon, mukhiya of Narwal-Barwal panchayat, added, "I have been representing this panchayat for the past two decades and have long observed Gajendra Babu's dedication to nature. He may be a heart patient, but his heart truly resides in trees and plants."
Teacher and nature lover Nippu Kumar Pathak highlighted how Yadav's work has inspired people across the region to engage in plantation drives and environmental protection, creating a ripple effect of positive change.
