Coimbatore Dump Yard Fire Extinguished After Intensive Four-Hour Operation
A significant fire erupted at the Vellalore dump yard in Coimbatore on Friday night, prompting a swift and extensive response from emergency services. The blaze, which began around 10:30 PM, was successfully extinguished by 3:30 AM on Saturday, following nearly four hours of concerted efforts by firefighters.
Firefighting Efforts and Scale of the Incident
More than 35 firefighters, equipped with four fire tenders, were deployed to combat the flames. According to K S Mohan, secretary of the Kurichi-Vellalore Pollution Prevention Action Committee and a local resident, the fire consumed waste covering an estimated 40 to 50 cents of the dump yard area. Mohan noted that while the incident was serious, it was not as massive as a previous fire in April 2024, which had raged for nearly 12 days, highlighting the relative containment of this latest event.

Coimbatore Corporation Commissioner M Sivaguru Prabakaran announced that an investigation has been initiated to determine the cause of the fire. He explained that the blaze ignited in an isolated section of the yard, which contained minimal legacy waste along with some fresh waste dumped from a material recovery facility several months ago. Prabakaran emphasized, "A fire in this area is unlikely unless there is some external interference. We are reviewing CCTV footage to identify any suspicious activity."
He further added that the situation could have been far more severe if the fire had spread to the bio-mining area or the fresh waste processing facility. The commissioner reassured the public that a fire service vehicle is stationed at the dump yard, enabling rapid response to such emergencies and helping prevent more catastrophic outcomes.
