The developing cyclonic storm Senyar over the Bay of Bengal is set to influence weather patterns across Maharashtra, with Pune expected to experience noticeable changes in atmospheric conditions this weekend. While the city won't face the severe weather conditions predicted for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, residents should prepare for altered weather patterns from Wednesday through Friday.
What Pune Residents Can Expect
The India Meteorological Department has forecast partly cloudy skies during afternoons and evenings on November 22 and 23 due to the cyclonic circulation effect. Morning hours will likely remain clear before cloud cover increases later in the day. This weather pattern represents a significant shift from the consistently clear skies that Pune has enjoyed recently.
Daytime temperatures have stabilized around 30 degrees Celsius across most parts of the city over recent days and are expected to maintain this range. However, night temperatures are showing an upward trend. After recording 11.0 degrees Celsius on Friday, the mercury is predicted to climb marginally in the coming days as cloud cover increases.
Cyclone Senyar's Development Timeline
According to Anupam Kashyapi, former head of weather forecasting at IMD, Cyclonic storm Senyar is likely to form on November 25-26 over the South-West Bay of Bengal. The weather system's influence over Maharashtra will be felt earlier, from November 22 to 24, though the impact on Pune will be relatively minor compared to coastal regions.
Kashyapi explains that the depression over the Bay of Bengal will cause light to very light rainfall in isolated locations across districts including Kolhapur, Satara, Sangli, Sindhudurg, Solapur and Ratnagiri. Meanwhile, other regions such as Marathwada, North Konkan and Vidarbha are expected to remain predominantly dry during this period.
Weather Patterns and Safety Information
The recent spell of clear skies and gradually warming winter temperatures in Pune and neighboring areas resulted from the weakening of northerly winds this week. As the Bay of Bengal depression intensifies, the increasing cloud cover over Pune and surrounding areas is likely to push night temperatures higher, according to Kashyapi's assessment.
Importantly, the IMD hasn't issued any weather warnings for Pune at this stage. The city's weather is expected to normalize from Wednesday onward, with pleasant conditions returning next week. Residents can look forward to the return of clear skies and stable temperatures as the cyclone's influence diminishes.
The Andaman and Nicobar Islands, being closer to the cyclone's formation area, are expected to experience more severe conditions including heavy to very heavy rainfall and squalls. Pune's location ensures it will only experience marginal effects from the weather system developing in the Bay of Bengal.
