Cyclone Causes Widespread Destruction in Silchar and Cachar District
A powerful cyclonic storm unleashed chaos across parts of Cachar district, including the town of Silchar, on Sunday afternoon. The intense weather event uprooted numerous trees, severed power lines, and brought normal life to a grinding halt as residents faced significant disruptions.
Key Areas Severely Impacted by the Storm
The worst-affected locations included Malugram, Tarapur, and the DC Office enclave, where several decades-old trees were torn from the ground. These fallen giants blocked crucial roads and caused damage to nearby infrastructure, creating obstacles for both pedestrians and vehicles.
On Circuit House Road and Dakbangla Road, the situation was particularly dire as fallen trees crushed parked cars and brought all traffic movement to a complete standstill. Additional blockages were reported near the divisional forest office and Urban Hospital along Silchar Trunk Road, further complicating access and mobility.
Residents Face Chaotic Scenes and Additional Distress
Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as strong winds and heavy rain swept through Silchar within minutes. The storm compounded an already difficult day for residents, coming shortly after an earthquake had jolted Cachar district earlier in the morning.
"We had barely begun recovering from the earthquake when the storm triggered fresh panic," shared a resident from Tarapur, highlighting the dual challenges faced by the community.
Adding to residents' distress, tin roofs were blown off houses and shops in multiple areas, exposing structures to the elements and creating hazardous conditions. Similar damage patterns were reported from Katigorah and adjoining regions, indicating the storm's broad impact across the district.
Widespread Power Outages and Emergency Response
The cyclone caused extensive power outages after electric poles and overhead wires sustained significant damage. Residents experienced prolonged disruptions to their daily routines as restoration efforts commenced on a war footing to address the critical infrastructure failures.
Emergency response teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Quick Response Teams (CQRT), and Cachar district administration have been deployed to clear debris and restore road connectivity. Officials from the district disaster management authority confirmed they are closely monitoring the situation and have urged people to exercise caution while recovery operations continue.
The coordinated efforts aim to quickly address the immediate challenges posed by the storm's aftermath and help the affected communities return to normalcy as soon as possible.
